About the Workbook

Brush lettering can be difficult to learn. Therefore, I developed the Lettering Ladder system to help you succeed. It starts with the easiest concepts to master and gradually adds more difficult aspects of lettering.

Similar to climbing a ladder, you will take one step at a time until you reach new heights with your lettering skills.

The Lettering Ladder system takes you through the following six steps:

1. Monoline Lettering
2. Faux Calligraphy (fake calligraphy)
3. Anatomy of Each Letter
4. Brush Lettering (connecting letters)
5. Bounce Lettering
6. Flourishing

You can progress through each step as quickly as you want or as slowly as you need. Make sure to master each step before moving on to the next.

In the Connecting Letters section, I have included practice sheets with all six steps of the Lettering Ladder system for 10 common phrases used to create cards. You can see an example of one of these practice sheets in the photos included with this listing.

– Create
– Thank you
– Celebrate
– I Love You
– Congratulations
– Happy Birthday
– It’s Your Day
– Praying for You
– Get Well Soon
– Just for You

This workbook could have been published as four separate workbooks because there is so much content within it.

However, I want you to have everything you need in one place without needing to invest in more than one book. Therefore, you will learn the entire Lettering Ladder system in this workbook as well as advanced topics like developing your own lettering style, lettering layouts, composition and much more.

Purchase this workbook and use my Lettering Ladder system to help you learn brush lettering!

What Artists Are Saying

“I have to tell you that I have purchased over 12 lettering books and this one is one of my favorites. Shelley offers a unique approach she calls “The Lettering Ladder” to teach you hand lettering. This is such an inspired way of looking at the process.

This comprehensive lettering guide includes videos and downloadable practice sheets. It just doesn’t get better than that. I highly recommend this book to anyone whether you are just starting out in your lettering journey or you are a seasoned letterer.”

– Shannon Foster, @shannon.binegarfoster

“Shelley, I have to say I think this book of yours will knock it out of the park as they say. You have included so many helpful tips and you have a tremendous amount of resources/back up materials to add to it. It’s like you are almost doing it for the reader/crafter. Your comments or text on the pages is always so encouraging. What a delight!

I am so enjoying your book. It is so very very obvious — or should be to everyone — that this book of yours has been a labor of love as well as a birthing of so many great ideas. You’ve put yourself in the shoes of the beginner — and the “pro” in some cases to answer questions and demystify the brush lettering concept and realities.

This workbook has everything. Loving it!! Can’t say it enough.”

– Edie Richardson, Calligrapher
